Don’t just complain about it.

Do something.

As an avid member of the Get Stuff Done society (affectionally called, GSD), taking action is a non-negotiable. Public misconception is a problem, and impactful, in-person educational connections is the solution.

GSD society is completely made up but always accepting new members.

The same talk around many tables and coffee shops and over phone calls started to get old.

“People don’t know where their food comes from”

Sometime in 2022, enough was enough. It was time to walk the walk and the perfect opportunity presented itself. McCall volunteered as a guest reader for Colorado Ag in Classroom since 2021 and quickly joined advisory committees. Through that involvement she helped with the communication and promotion of the programs, and organized and attended tours for the Summer Ag Institutes.

During one phone call or another was asked “hey, do you want to write a book about Pueblo Chiles?” A quick “sure” was followed by excited panicking. Early in her event-planning days, McCall heard the phrase ‘be like a duck—calm on the top and paddling like crazy underneath,’ and it’s stuck with her ever since. Her response to question is a perfect example. She’s never published a book before, but why should that stop her? The first step was convincing her talented sister, Rachel, that she needed to be the one to write it. The second step, convincing her talented cousin, Sierra, to do the art. After some ardent encouraging, Rachel agreed to pen the words, and Sierra agreed to draw the pictures.

After the enormous success of Seed, Sprout, Spice! All About Pueblo Chiles, the trio was asked again to create another book, this time all about potatoes, and thus Plenty of Potatoes was born.

Coincidentally or serendipitously or fatefully, Knecht is pronounced like connect, and so that’s exactly what Mrs. Knecht does. She connected all the parts and pieces to publish books to be impactful tools to combat misconceptions about agriculture. Through the Literacy Project, thousands of kids and teachers learn about farming and ranching. The connection between where food comes from and how it gets to plates is a little less distant and a little more appreciated.

Colorado Ag in the Classroom Literacy Project

The Literacy Project is an annual interactive learning experience where each participating Colorado class receives a FREE class kit complete with educational resources and enough supplies to complete hands-on activities with students.

This program integrates agricultural themes into PreK-12 instruction, connecting to academic standards for language arts, social studies, STEM, and AFNR.

Colorado Agriculture in the Classroom’s Literacy Project seeks to cultivate a love for reading while enhancing the understanding of agricultural concepts, ultimately fostering empowered and literate communities. A new topic and book, featuring Colorado agriculture stories, are chosen each year. This is a FREE program for Colorado PreK-12 students.
